Settings > Media
WordPress Media Settings section is used to control settings related to uploading and displaying media items on your WordPress website.
These are the settings elements available on the WordPress Media Settings.
Image Sizes
This section is used to control the sizes of the media files WordPress will generate when you upload a new media file via the Media Library.
By default, there will be three image sizes, Thumbnail, Medium, and Large.
You can edit the sizes of any of the given media sizes according to your preferences.
Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional) option will crop the images to the exact dimensions so that they will always be in the given size whatever size you upload.
- Keep in mind that, these sizes will not be generated if you directly upload media files via FTP or other methods.
- If you add any additional media sizes using additional code, they will be also displayed here.
- Changing the dimensions of the images here will only have an effect on future uploads. If you want to regenerate the sizes, you will have to use additional plugins such as Regenerate Thumbnails.
Uploading Files
Uploading files settings only have one option “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders“.
This option will be enabled by default. If you visit the /wp-content/uploads/ directory of your WordPress installation, you will see that the images you upload are organized in folders named after the Years and Months. That’s simply what it does.
It is recommended to leave Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders option enabled as it helps WordPress to avoid troubles and display images correctly.
