Synced Pattern

Do you add the same newsletter box or disclaimer at the end of many posts? Updating it later on every single post is painful. A synced pattern solves this problem.

A synced pattern is a group of blocks that you save once and reuse anywhere. When you edit it in one place, WordPress updates it everywhere.

Synced patterns and reusable blocks

If you have used WordPress for a while, you may know this feature as reusable blocks. WordPress 6.3 renamed reusable blocks to synced patterns and placed them alongside other patterns in the editor. The way they work stayed the same.

Here is the main difference between the two kinds of patterns:

  • Synced pattern: Every copy stays linked. Change one, and all copies change.
  • Regular (not synced) pattern: It is just a starting layout, so each copy can be edited on its own.

How to create a synced pattern

  1. First, select the block or group of blocks you want to reuse.
  2. Now, click the three-dot Options icon in the block toolbar.
  3. Next, choose Create pattern and give it a clear name.
  4. Here, make sure the Synced toggle is turned on, then save the pattern.
  5. Finally, insert it anywhere from the Patterns tab of the block inserter.

In a block theme, you can view and edit all your patterns from Appearance → Editor → Patterns.

Warning

Editing a synced pattern changes it on every page that uses it. To change only one copy, select it and use the Detach option in the toolbar menu first.

When should you use a synced pattern?

Use it for anything that must look the same everywhere, such as call-to-action boxes, contact details or notices. For example, an author bio box is a perfect fit. When your bio changes, you edit it once and every post shows the new version.

I use one for the short disclosure note on my review posts, and it saves me plenty of time.

So, a synced pattern lets you edit once and update everywhere. That's all for today. If something is not clear, ask us in the comment box below and we will help you out.
