Schema Markup

Search for a cake recipe on Google, and you will see some results with star ratings and cooking time right in the listing. That extra information usually comes from schema markup.

Schema markup is a type of structured data. It is code that describes your content in a format search engines understand.

What is schema markup?

Search engines still guess a lot. Schema markup removes the guesswork by labeling each piece of information. For example, it can tell Google that "4.5" is a review rating, "30 minutes" is the cooking time and "Rahul" is the author.

Think of it as name tags at a conference. Everyone was already there, but now it is clear who is who. The labels come from Schema.org, a shared vocabulary that the major search engines created together.

How does schema markup help your site?

  • It makes your pages eligible for rich results like star ratings, prices and event dates.
  • Rich results stand out in search and can earn more clicks.
  • It helps search engines understand your brand and your authors.

Schema markup is not a direct ranking factor, and Google doesn't promise rich results even when your markup is correct.

How to add schema markup in WordPress

WordPress core doesn't add schema markup by itself, so the easiest way is an SEO plugin. Popular ones like Yoast SEO, Rank Math and All in One SEO add basic schema automatically in JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data), the format Google recommends.

  1. First, install and activate an SEO plugin.
  2. Now, fill in your site details, such as whether the site represents a person or an organization.
  3. Next, choose a schema type for each post, like Article or Recipe, if the plugin allows it.
  4. Finally, test the page with Google's Rich Results Test.
Warning

Only mark up information that visitors can actually see on the page. Fake reviews or hidden data can lead to a manual action from Google.
