Post

Every blog article you read on a WordPress site is a post. A post is a dated piece of content that appears on your blog page, with the newest one on top.

Posts are the heart of any blog or news site. If you plan to publish regularly, this is the content type you will use the most.

What makes a post different?

Posts are time-based. Each one has a publish date, an author and, usually, a comment section. WordPress lists them in reverse chronological order, just like a diary where the latest entry comes first.

Here are a few other things that come with every post:

  • You can group posts with categories and tags.
  • New posts are added to your site's RSS feed automatically.
  • Posts show up in date, author and category archives.
  • Every post needs at least one category. By default, it is Uncategorized.

A fresh WordPress install even comes with a sample post called "Hello world!" that you can edit or delete.

How to create a post in WordPress

  1. First, go to Posts → Add New Post in your dashboard.
  2. Now, type a title and write your content using blocks.
  3. Next, open the settings sidebar and choose a category, tags and a featured image.
  4. Here, click Save draft if you want to finish later.
  5. Finally, click Publish and confirm to make the post live.
Tip

You don't have to publish right away. You can set a future date and time instead, and WordPress will publish the post for you.

Post status in WordPress

A post can be a Draft, Pending Review, Scheduled, Published or Private. You can see all of them under Posts → All Posts, where the links at the top filter each status in one click.
