Page

Wondering where your About, Contact and Privacy Policy content fits in WordPress? It goes into a page.

A page is a static piece of content that doesn't depend on a date. It stays in one place, usually linked from your menu, and doesn't show up in your blog listing. Most websites need at least a few pages, even if they never publish a single blog post.

Pages vs posts in WordPress

Think of your website as a shop. Posts are like the offers board that changes every week, while pages are the signboard and the shop timings on the door.

  • Pages have no categories or tags.
  • Pages are not included in your RSS feed.
  • Pages can have parent and child pages, for example Services with Web Design under it.
  • Pages can use special templates from your theme, like a full-width layout.

By default, a new WordPress install comes with a "Sample Page" and a draft "Privacy Policy" page.

How to create a page

  1. First, go to Pages → Add New Page.
  2. Now, add a title and build your content with blocks.
  3. Next, in the page settings sidebar, choose a parent page or a template if you need one.
  4. Finally, click Publish and add the page to your menu.
Tip

You can make any page your homepage. Go to Settings → Reading and choose A static page under Your homepage displays.

When should you use a page?

Use a page for anything timeless, such as About, Contact, Services, a portfolio or a landing page. If the content is news, a tutorial or an update that belongs in your blog, use a post instead.

A simple test helps here. If the content will still be correct a year from now without any date, a page is usually the right choice.

To recap, pages hold your fixed, timeless content while posts carry the updates. That's it. Do let us know in the comment box below if you have any doubts.
