Block Pattern

Designing a good-looking section from scratch takes time, especially when you are new to WordPress. This is where a block pattern comes handy. It is a ready-made group of blocks that you can insert with one click and then edit freely.

Patterns save you a ton of design work. In this article, we will see what they are, where they come from and how to use them.

What is a block pattern in WordPress?

A pattern is a layout made of normal blocks, such as a heading, a paragraph, an image and a button arranged together. Think of it as a page section that a designer has already prepared for you.

For example, a pattern can give you a pricing section, a team section or a footer with three columns. You simply replace the sample text and images with your own. Patterns work in posts, pages and, with a block theme, in the Site Editor too.

Where do block patterns come from?

  • WordPress itself: Core includes a small set of general patterns.
  • Your theme: Most modern themes, especially block themes, add patterns that match their design.
  • The Pattern Directory: WordPress.org hosts a free library of community patterns in the Pattern Directory.
  • Plugins: Some plugins add patterns for galleries, testimonials or call-to-action boxes.

How to insert a block pattern

  1. First, open any post or page in the block editor.
  2. Now, click the + block inserter button at the top left.
  3. Next, switch to the Patterns tab.
  4. Here, browse the categories and click the pattern you like.
  5. Finally, replace the sample content with your own text and images.
Note

After you insert a regular pattern, it turns into normal blocks. Editing it on one page does not change the same pattern on other pages.

Patterns are perfect when you want a quick layout without installing a page builder. They also make building a landing page in WordPress much faster.

To put it simply, a block pattern is a shortcut to a good design. That's all about block patterns. Tell us which pattern you like most in the comment box below.
